Romans 12:3-13

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Message Notes

1. Take off the beer goggles.

We have to have a clear picture of the grace of God in our lives. He alone has saved us and gifted us with faith to accomplish His will.

Comparison of those gifts will eventually result in pride.

James 4:10 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

We must have a “sober” view of ourselves in order to exalt others.

2. Love has to be real.

1 Cor 13 13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.

This is the very definition of true devotion. Loving someone like this is elevating them.

3. Be an elevator

Phil 2:3 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
10Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

  1. Honor the price paid.
  2. Honor the gift given.
  3. Honor the process.
  4. Honor by understanding.
