1 Kings 19:9-18

There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

Message Notes

1. Elijah was called at a tough time in Israel’s history. Terrible king Drought If you surrender your life to God’s will, He will ask you to do tough things at difficult times. Moses, Gideon, John the Baptist etc When God asks us the do difficult things in a difficult season we must guard our familiarities.

2. There is more than one viewpoint to every situation.

Perspective 1. “Look how God was with me the whole time.”

Perspective 2. “Why did God make me go through that.” God had given Elijah some amazing victories but he had become familiar with life being hard and his defenses were down. He had become familiar with struggle in a way that it wasn’t producing anything.

Offspring always comes from whoever you’re intimate with. Make sure you’re familiar with the things that will produce the right returns.

3. The things you become familiar with are the things you will see first.

  1. I almost starved to death God miraculously provided for me.
  2. I had to beg a widow for food I never went without
  3. The widows son died while I was staying at her house. God proved himself powerful by answering my prayer
  4. Nobody listens to me. God showed himself in an way no-one could argue with when he burned up the altar.
  5. I am helpless and all alone. There are 7000 in Israel who have not bowed.

4. Only you can change what you get close to. Before you snuggle up to that defeated mindset take a second to see what God has done. Remember that even in pain I can be accomplishing God’s will.

5. When we get too familiar with failure we forget why we are here.
