Message Text

Hebrews 10:19-25

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Genesis 2:18
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Message Notes

1. Draw near to God.

Jesus did get away at times to pray but the majority of his time was around other people. You can and should pray by yourself but there is a benefit to praying with others. You can and should worship by yourself but there is a benefit to worshiping with others

Matt 18:19-20 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

2. Hold unswervingly to the hope we profess.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Community makes it easier to hope. Sometimes we need people to point us to hope when we can’t see it ourselves. Hope Community

2 Timothy 4:9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.

3. Consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
We can accomplish more together than apart. How can I encourage you to be great? Paul realized the necessity for us to live in a community where we can push each other to greater things.

Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
James 5:16 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

4. Committed to community
Keep the habit of meeting together even as things get worse. The solution to what we are living in is never isolation. When we live in isolation we can’t act like the church. The Gospel going forward requires community. Where there is community there is hope!
